Butterflies and Chameleons are all over the place...from Angola to Zambia

Here's a $64 quiz. Which country owns this flag? Calling once, calling twice, calling thrice. Ringggggggggggggggg. This is the flag of a chameleon country. a country yet to be emancipated from the shackles of greed, power and corruption. Seriously, this flag is a concoction but crafted and ready to be raised once we witness the rise to sovereignty of a country with a plurality of chameleons and butterflies. Yes, chameleons and butterflies.

For a quick run through. Chameleons are politicians who change their political colors and affiliations as frequent as they change their clothes. Butterflies? These are the politicians hopping from one landing spot to another, hopping like predators, preying for the next hapless victim in the political spectrum, all in the name of greed and power. Or in some variations, you may come across lizards with butterflies on their head. It’s a given that politics is a world of compromise but once you get into it, you are threading a fine line between the righteous and evil but as James Lowell, an American Poet, once vociferously stated: ‘Compromise makes a good umbrella, but a poor roof; it is temporary expedient, often wise in party politics, almost sure to be unwise in statesmanship.’

But once these politicians are in the corridors of power, it has been proven over and over again that ‘power corrupt. Absolute power corrupts absolutely’. Does that sound familiar? With political dynasties all over the land? And political kingpins would retort that how can they deprive their family members from succeeding them [once they get booted out of office due to term limits] because it’s the ‘voice of the people’? Forget that crap because this is pork barrel, inside out.

Going back to our world of butterflies and chameleons, it behooves that they their deaf ears should lend an ear to what Dwight Eisenhower, the American President once said: ‘The supreme quality for leadership is unquestionably INTEGRITY. Without it, no real success is possible, no matter whether it is on a section gang, a football field, in an army , or in an office’. But during this global pandemic, this is not the time to throw the towel, otherwise the vultures will simply feast on all the booties they can collect. In two [2] months time, the United States, the world’s bastion of democracy, will conduct its presidential elections again and barring the misalignment of pollsters across the political spectrum, the next U.S. President will be Joe Biden and to quote the imminent next U.S. President: ‘ If you do politics the right way, I believe, you can actually make people’s life better. And integrity is the minimum ante to get into the game.’

I-N-T-E-G-R-I-T-Y, that’s it, that’s the last non-negotiable bar all our politicians need to hurdle if only to give their constituencies a new lease of life before we reboot, rebound and recover.
