Helicopter View

Why do we need a 'Helicopter View'

Byrd Braggett says, 'Look at life throughout the windshield, not the rear view mirror'. But in today's tought daily grind, that's not enough if we want to go beyond survival mode. For obvious reasons, all of us drivers just can’t drive without those rear-view and side mirrors. We don’t want to risk our safety. We don’t want to get blind-sided.

In our daily lives, we’re spending the biggest chunk of our time with both our family and work colleagues. And when this global pandemic locked us all, we’re practically spending 99% of our daily lives with our family, our loved ones. But this just can’t go on forever, right ? Gotta live more normal lives and once we get into our normal lives, that’s when we get to handle our challenges, our travails, our woes.

In retrospect, have you ever been so bewildered as to why you can’t find a fix, a solution on a problem when you’re right into it ? When you are in the middle of things, yet you just can’t figure things out ? And surely, sometimes the better part of you prevails on you and whispers “hey, you’re so close to the trees, you just can’t see the forest” !

True indeed. You got to take steps back. In fact and in truth, you need to take lots of steps back away from the trees for you to see the forest. And if you heed that advice, surely you would realize instantly that, that matters. Why ? because by then you can see a bigger, wider picture and once you piece the jigsaw puzzle together, it’s not far-fetched for you to piece together all those fragmented parts.

But is that all ? Unfortunately, you can step back only so much, no farther than that. So, what are the cards left for you to play ? This is where we introduce the ‘helicopter view’.

Why the ‘helicopter view’ ? That is the best vantage point you can reach vertically and realistically and once you’re up there, too many clouded views and too many concealed blind spots suddenly become more visible both visually and mentally as well. Remember in boxing, the boxer who has that reach advantage gains the upper hand even during the pre-fight betting ? Simply because of his reach, a boxer becomes the favorite even before he steps into the four-cornered ring. And when he finally jumps into the ring, he plays up his ace card. that psychological advantage over the hapless underdog.

Let’s break down all these words by relating the ‘helicopter view’ to this global pandemic. We as workers and as parents, by now we should be taking the long view, by looking ahead, by looking farther way beyond the numbers in the calendar. Ask yourself how will you live life from hereon ? And how will your child’s schooling shape up from hereon ? These are interrogatives that we should be asking ourselves proactively before our destiny down the road throws those perplexing questions upon us.

Gotta move folks but “NEVER ANNOUNCE YOUR MOVES BEFORE YOU MAKE THEM”.
